Sketch for dawn, 2024

Ilari Hautamäki's edition consists of 8 abstract paintings. Vivid brush strokes in vibrant colours form a dazzling composition that reminds of organic foliage. The motifs in the series are similar, drawing inspiration from Hautamäki's studio, where the artist initially experimented with replicating the leaves of a Yucca plant. From there he developed a fresh visual lexicon inspired by the interplay of shape and colour. Delving into the inherent chaos of organic structures, Hautamäki explores abstraction and representation at the same time. Different versions of a "perfect chaos" emerge from this combination or colour, shape and empty space that itself turns into shape, with an almost melodic character.

Ilari Hautamäki

Ilari Hautamäki’s (*1983) paintings occupy the middle ground between the functional and the organic, the built and the natural. Hautamäki aims for freedom in his painting, while still retaining his own characteristic rigour. He is interested in nature’s ‘perfect chaos’, in how the uncontrolled can simultaneously be in exactly the right order. The rhythms and movement in Hautamäki’s paintings recur from one work to the next, but varying as they do so. Alongside the movement and brushstrokes the paintings also contain clear colour fields and blank spots and gaps, thus giving rise to the rhythm that is the hallmark of Hautamäki’s works.
