The Austrian painter Tobias Pils approaches the canvas with a precise idea, which he then executes in a muted color palette. He lets the energy of his subject speak through him, but is careful to add a certain estrangement to the work, so that the result offers a possibility of connection for everybody.

Lena Göbel lets her rural roots pervade her art. Her motives are nature, the environment and the people close to her; formally too, she translates country life into her work. For her woodcuts she uses printing posts from pearwood or spruce, and the print itself seems almost archaic in its simplicity.

In his work, figurative painting meets abstract shapes, and both are equally important to him. His inspirations come from music and literature, as he translates their rhythms into art.

Collector Stories Kristian Roland, Aarhus

What started out as an interest of his father’s, turned out to impact the life of young art collector Kristian Roland in a surprising way. Art became a focal point in his life, which the growing art collection in his home bears witness to. For Kristian, artworks are carriers of stories, the best of which challenge the spectator and serve as gateways for unexplored territory.

Visiting Marjatta Tapiola, one of the main protagonists of Finnish Neo-Expressionism, in her mansion in Sysmä, a two-hour drive from Helsinki, takes you back in time. From her studio in a 400-year-old threshing house, far removed from the outside world, Marjatta creates her monumental paintings that recount life's cruelty and carnal indulgences and, more recently, increasingly take their inspiration from biblical themes.
